Dear Readers,

Contents

We are celebrating 'Earth day 2009' and the slogan is "Reuse the past, Recycle the present and Save the future". Friends of the Earth emphasize a carbon free future based on renewable energy. Yes, Green generation is the global theme for Earth day. To meet the rising demand caused by the burgeoning industrial development and exploitation of natural resources the concept of sustainability need to be introduced. Environmentalists have warned aganist biofules saying they could produce twice the amount of carbon emissions from the fossil fuels. It is for us to put in practice a sustainable solution. In this context, let us strive for the creation of a new green economy to transform global education system into a green one.

Interestingly the ENVIS centre focuses on Microorganisms and Environment Mangement, aptly emphasizing the theme of Earth day, as microbes recycle the waste for greener environment. This issue includes articles on microbial bioconversion of chromium and waste water treatment with microbes. Besides report on "Soil bacteria breathe toxic metals" is note worthy.

We are happy to share our views with you and looking forward to your suggestion and feedback (www.envismadras.org/send_feedback.php) on the artciles published in the Newsletter.
